Holst's "Planets" is one of my favorite pieces of classical music. As of now, I own three other recordings by Boult, Bernstein, and John Williams. While Boult is quite regal and elegant, Bernstein is more "over the top", and Williams is, interestingly, somewhat lean and restrained/5().

Karajan's Planets with the Vienna Philharmonic begins with a somewhat manic Mars. At times it feels as though everything could come apart at the seams. The percussion section, at times, begins to leave the rest of the orchestra behind. This is a loose Mars, but maybe it should be played like this. Mars, the Bringer of War/5(5).

His last affair was this performance of Holst 's The Planets with the Vienna Philharmonic. Recorded in bone-crushing -- but still deep and colorful -- sound by John Culshaw, Karajan 's view of The Planets, like his view of Vaughan Williams and Britten, is decidedly superficial.7/
